Hongfang Liu, PhD


Hongfang Liu, Ph.D., is Dr. Richard F. Emslander Professorship II in Biomedical Informatics at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Liu directs the Biomedical Informatics program at the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCaTS) and co-leads Cancer Data Science and Informatics of Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center.


Dr. Liu earned her B.S. in mathematics and statistics at the University of Science and Technology of China, where she also completed graduate study in applied mathematics. She subsequently earned her M.S. in computer and information science at Fordham University and her Ph.D. in computer science specialized in biomedical informatics at the Graduate Center of City University of New York.


The primary research focus of Dr. Liu is to facilitate the secondary use of clinical data for clinical and translational science research and health care delivery improvement using data science, artificial intelligence and informatics approaches. Her research interest in the cancer domain includes cancer data standards and interoperability, informatics for cancer prevention and survivorship, and cancer digital twins. She is also interested in methodology innovation for fair and inclusive cancer research. She has been extensively funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health since 2003. Her work accelerates the pace of knowledge discovery, implementation and delivery of improved health care. Dr. Liu is a prolific author of over 400 peer-reviewed articles and abstracts. She has also served as editorial reviewer for prominent scientific journals.


Dr. Liu is a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics, a fellow of the International Academy of Health Science Informatics, and a member of several professional societies, including the International Society for Computational Biology and the American Medical Informatics Association, where she leads the initiatives in promoting people-centric, value-added, and evidence-based artificial intelligence (AI). Dr. Liu has received many awards and honors, including the NSF CAREER Award, the NCATS Informatics Innovator Award, and the AMIA Donald A.B. Lindberg Award for Informatics Innovation.
