R. Michael Townsend, PhD
Dr. R. Michael Townsend, currently is the Senior IT Director of the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and former CIO of The James Cancer Hospital. Since 2009 he has been accountable to create, enable, and maintain IT solutions in the complex space encompassing the administrative, research, clinical, and educational missions to meet the goals and objectives of the Cancer Program at OSU.
With more than 30 years of experience in IT leadership roles in the business, education, and scientific domains, Townsend can translate between technical requirements and the operational and strategic alignments and practices between the OSU Cancer Program, the OSU Wexner Medical Center, the University, and its affiliates and collaborators. With a background in research science this is particularly relevant to the Cancer Program’s wide presence on campus and its strong focus on research, bench-to-bedside, and precision medicine practices. Prior to joining OSU, he has held executive IT positions at The University of Chicago, Lehman Brothers, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and RIK Data Solutions.
Dr. Townsend earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a 2nd bachelor’s degree in mathematics, from Syracuse University, and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Chemistry from the University of Chicago.
