Linda D. Bosserman, MD, FASCO, FACP

Linda Bosserman, MD, FACP, graduated with highest honors in biochemistry from UC Berkeley, then received her medical degree, completed an internship and residency in internal medicine, and served on the faculty at Stanford University. This was followed by oncology fellowships and faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital. She returned home to southern California in 1990 where she was a community medical oncologist with Wilshire Oncology for 26 years until the practice joined the City of Hope Medical Group in September of 2014. She focuses on breast and gynecologic oncology as well as value based initiatives for the organization. Dr. Bosserman is an active member of the academic breast cancer and medical oncology faculty teams and works across the organization on implementation of value based initiatives with integrated clinical research as City of Hope prepares for their Epic conversion in December of 2017.   

Dr. Bosserman served as President and managing partner of Wilshire Oncology for 10 years, focusing her leadership on piloting electronic tools, teamwork and care processes to enable oncologists to deliver, document and quantify high quality oncology care while enhancing patient participation in clinical trials. Their practice piloted successful medical home based care with a large local HMO and subsequently with Anthem Blue Cross of California. The Wilshire Oncology practice’s longstanding clinical trial program, where Dr. Bosserman was PI for the UCLA network and many other studies, earned an ASCO Clinical Trials award in 2009. The group published the first article about patient assistance programs in JOP in 2011. The group published the results of the practice’s guideline compliance with adjuvant hormone therapy in early hormone receptor positive breast cancer in 2009. They published about payer provider initiatives in value based care in JOP in 2012. 

As an ASCO member since 1990, Dr. Bosserman has served on the Public Issues Committee, the Bisphosphonate then Breast Bone Metastasis Guideline and the SLND in Early Breast cancer guideline committees, Quality Care Symposium Planning Committee, and Practice Guidelines Implementation Network. She was elected and is serving a 4 year term, 6/14-6/18, on the board of directors of ASCO to represent community oncology. She is a member of the Pathways Task Force, the Physician Payment Reform group, steering committee and member of Payer Provider Initiative conference as well as being an active liaison to the Clinical Practice Committee. Dr. Bosserman is currently also serving as one of the two faculty mentors for the ASCO policy fellows for 2017-2018. She has served as a reviewer for JOP as requested on issues of value, quality, costs, and electronic medical records. She was a steering committee member for ASCO’s inaugural Oncology Practice meeting in 2017, is co-chair for the 2018 meeting and will be chair of the meeting for 2019. She serves on the steering committee and has been chosen an annual presenter for over 10 years at the Cancer Center Business Summit’s annual meeting of diverse stakeholders focused on advancing the business of high quality cancer care.

Dr. Bosserman has served as an editor of the Journal of Community and Supportive Oncology (Formerly Community Oncology journal) since its inception in 2004. The journal focuses on state of the art scientific and programmatic articles to empower oncology professionals in their daily care of patients in our rapidly changing health care environment. Dr. Bosserman has been active in setting goals for the journal, recruiting authors with diverse and relevant cutting edge information for practicing oncology clinicians and their administrators. She has authored the annual year end Letter from the Editor which she developed into a year in review to highlight issues for oncology practitioners.

Dr. Bosserman previously served on the board of directors and chair of the Clinical Quality Committees for both the Community Oncology Alliance and the former Cancer Centers of Excellence. She served as the chair of the Breast Committee for California’s division of the American Cancer Committee and was actively involved in her two community hospitals’ Cancer Committees, community cancer programs including Breast Health and psychosocial oncology programs for 26 years. Dr. Bosserman lectures and writes for lay and professional audiences with a focus on breast cancer, practice organization and electronic medical record use to facilitate high quality, value based care delivery with incorporation of clinical research. She was invited and participated in the White House Physician Forum on Health Reform in 2009. Dr. Bosserman also has significant experience with regional and national payers. She has served on the board of directors and executive committees of 2 large local Independent Physician Associations (IPAs), has consulted on oncology issues for health plans, and served 9 years on the Physician Relations committee to Anthem in California. The Anthem PRC approved all final medical policies and programs for the organization as required under California law.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Bosserman volunteers through the Los Angeles County Fair as a member of the board of directors to expand the Farm education and event programs to help people learn to grow, harvest, prepare and enjoy the variety of plant based foods that can improve health and help reverse the obesity epidemic that is raising diabetes, heart disease and cancer risks. She enjoys cooking, writing, playing music and traveling with her family; husband Ted, 5 children, 8 (soon 9!) grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren! 

Dr. Bosserman has received numerous awards distinguishing her as a leader and advocate for high quality cancer care and as a clinical humanitarian. She has also been recognized by her peers for inclusion in the “Best Doctors” database annually since 2005. Dr. Bosserman received the Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (FASCO) award in 2017 in recognition of her years of service and leadership to ASCO and the oncology profession. In 2017 Dr. Bosserman transitioned to an administrative role at City of Hope with the goal of supporting the implementation of oncology pathways and the Epic EMR transition in ways that will enhance patient care and professional satisfaction, better integrate and leverage the talents and knowledge of academic and community clinicians and administrators while expanding clinical research and international outreach in a highly competitive, value based health care region. She decreased her workdays to 3 days per week to allow more time for professional service and writing. She is interested in the analytic and data needs to iterate transitions to value based care, focusing on the practical aspects of metrics and data collection integrated into care delivery teams with engaged patients and systems of ongoing, targeted quality improvement. She remains committed to bringing personalized, state of the art cancer care, clinical research and education to patients to optimize patient health outcomes while supporting clinicians and administrators with the practical, multidisciplinary knowledge of science, delivery methodologies and analytics to support a challenged work force through the transitions to high quality, high value cancer care
